We lost a tremendous writer and a member of the Curtis Brown family on Sunday — Tony Hillerman was 83. The Times obit is here, and Jeff Abbott says it better than I could here. He will be dearly missed.

Incredibly sad news.

What’s fascinating to me is that he was my current age when “The Blessing Way” came out. There is a certain depth that came easily to him which I loved more than anything. I understand a little more of that, now.
I hope as we look back on his work we can see the value of putting voices into print we wouldn’t otherwise hear from. He’ll be missed.
Stacey says
I have not read his work before, but it sounds like he was an amazing author with an amazing voice. It is sad when the world looses someone that is so dear.
P.S. my word verification says “unducks” very interesting….

He was one of my favorite writers, and did such an incredible job of being respectful of the Navajo and Hopi traditions while still being able to introduce them to the American reading public. Such a terrible loss!
Susan says
I loved his books. When I worked in libraries, there were always long lines of folks waiting for his latest one to come out; that’s sad news you’ve posted.

I very much enjoyed his work. He opened up one’s eyes to the beauty of a different culture, land and experience. Magnificent legacy and for to which we should all strive.

WAAAAAAAAAAA…..He was one of the few, few writers I admired as a person. Oh, how he’ll be missed!

I’ve never heard of him before, but I hope his family, related and extended, is doing OK. 🙁

It’s been many years since I read one of his books. The obit reminded me of why I enjoyed his work and I believe I will revisit the magic again. Rest easy Mr. Hillerman, your words will live forever.
lotusloq says
He will live on always in his books as will the people and cultures he portrayed.
Thank you, Mr. Hillerman, for sharing yourself with us!

Great writer and someone who really established a whole genre of mysteries. Many current published authors owe their success in part to Hillerman’s trailblazing.
My favorite quote in one of his obits: his former agent advised him to “get rid of all that Indian stuff.”

Not Tony Hillerman, I was just complaining to audible.com that they only have a single abridge work by him and no unabridged. That sucks. (Can’t remember my google id to log in). Bubba

We, the two Mystery readers in this house, are so sorry to hear of Hillerman’s passing.
He wrote with respect and love of man and is a big part of the reason that I fell in love with Mysteries and want to write them also.
Sorry, for your loss, and the worlds.
Scott says
Sorry to hear, Nathan.

Indeed, sad news.

Tony Hillerman is far and away my favorite of American mystery writers (most of my favorites are dead Englishwomen). I used to live in the Four Corners area and loved the way he depicted the land and the culture in his books. I will miss him. May his memory be eternal!

I was — briefly — acquainted with him in the mid-1980s, while a student at the University of New Mexico, where Hillerman taught journalism. More than anything, he was an incredibly nice, genuine and humble guy. He’ll be missed,
