Dear Agent for a Day,
For astrophysicist Allie, falling in love is as easy as identifying the planet Venus. However, keeping her boyfriends from fleeing as though she’s become a Martian is considerably more difficult. In an attempt to ‘act natural’ and protect future relationships from failure caused by her over-eagerness, Allie creates The 15 Date Rule: never sleep with a man until after the 15th date. Suddenly her dating life seems a lot easier, that is, until she meets Matt. THE 15 DATE RULE is a 102,000 word romantic comedy.
All 31-year-old Allie wants is someone to love her. She’s worked hard to have what she has: a nice house, a friendly dog, a good relationship with her long-time best friend and a career that boosts her confidence with awards and prestige. All that is missing from her life is a loving partner who enjoys star gazing.
During the break-up that leads to the creation of the 15 date rule, Allie meets Matt, the man hired by her boyfriend to break up with her. Afterwards Allie can’t stop thinking about Matt and how perfect the kind-hearted man seemed to be. Too bad he would never go for someone he was hired to break up with–like Allie.
When one of Allie’s work contracts sours unexpectedly and she faces losing everything she’s worked for, she decides it is time to take risks. Maybe pursuing a man like Matt is worth the chance of rejection.

Interesting premise, would love to read the scene where Matt breaks up with Allie for her boyfriend. That seems to a starting point and main drive for your plot, and would also help to introduce Matt more if you brought it out more in the query

Thank you for your query. Unfortunately I’ll have to pass, as there was nothing special about your premise that caught my eye. Also, I would suggest that you edit your query a little, as each paragraph seems to be an introduction said in a different way rather than a continuation of the plot.
I’m also not sure that 102k is a viable length for a romance novel. (Though that could be my ignorance with the genre speaking.)

Encouraging rejection[Reasons: In my top 10, but this just sounded too much like a Matthew McConaughey comedy – maybe it’s a real book! Alas]

Dear Author:
Thank you for submitting your query for consideration. I appreciate the time, energy, and passion that it required to complete “The 15 Date Rule”.
Unfortunately, given the thousands of queries that I receive annually, I can only request a small percentage of manuscripts for possible representation. While I find the subject matter of your novel intriguing, it does not meet my editorial needs at this time.
I am grateful for the opportunity to consider your work and wish you much luck in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Laura Martone

[reasoning: I liked the 15 date rule idea and the man hired to break up with her. But the plot doesn’t hang together. If she falls in love so easily, why is it difficult to risk rejection? The fact that she’s an astrophysicist doesn’t seem important to the plot. The writing style is readable, though.]
