Dear Agent for a Day:
The symbol carved post-mortem into the third victim was the same as the other two. The same symbol that adorned the cover of a little-known true crime paperback. The same symbol left on the private vault walls of unscrupulous billionaires for almost twenty years.
A butterfly.
Jonathan and Lew, a retired pair of Robinhoods, learn of the murders and set out to protect their body of work, their identities and Jonathan’s little girl.
But the murders are just the bait.
Caught in a diseased madman’s diabolical trap, Jonathan is spirited halfway across the globe where he has to fight for his life, his daughter and both friend and foe alike, with Lew desperately trying to come to the rescue.
They soon learn they’re not the only ones with secrets. But everyone who’s ever known this secret is dead.
And a little girl is next.

Dear Author:
I’m going to have to pass.
-Agent
Why: It sounds like it might be another crime book where a criminal draws inspiration from a novel. I can’t tell what the plot is exactly, which is another reason I’m rejecting.

Dear Author,
Thank you for taking the time to submit your query to me.
At this moment in time, however, I choose to pass on your project. This does not automatically mean your query isn’t good enough. It simply means that I am not the right agent for this project. This can be for a number of reasons.
If you would like to know why, you can send a reply to this mail. Please change the subject line to: FEEDBACK / STEALING GENIUS / YOUR NAME. I will respond to your request within two weeks.
Good luck with finding representation and keep on writing!
Kind regards,
Nicole34

This sounds very cool and the query definitely starts with a sense of urgency. But I think it’s jumping too fast for me to catch on. Best of luck.

Thank you for your query. You show a very strong voice in your synopsis, so much so that I’m already in suspense, but your 129k word count gave me a bit of a shock. If I had more time I would request a partial, but at the moment I’m afraid I’ll have to pass.
(Damn the 5 titles only rule!)

Form rejection[Reasons: Doesn’t grab me, nothing in the writing to make me sit up and take notice – and Robin Hoods ain’t one word. (My tolerance is waning – this is my 38th query response tonight – sorry!)]

Dear Author:
Thank you for submitting your query for consideration. I appreciate the time, energy, and passion that it required to complete “Stealing Genius”.
Unfortunately, given the thousands of queries that I receive annually, I can only request a small percentage of manuscripts for possible representation. While I find the subject matter of your novel intriguing, it does not meet my editorial needs at this time.
I am grateful for the opportunity to consider your work and wish you much luck in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Laura Martone

[reasoning: I don’t like the writing style. You lost me at “diseased madman”.]
