Dear Agent for a Day:
There is nothing in the galaxy Akila wants more than the oblivion of her next sed-pinch. Hiding out on P-4 should have been enough to keep Contact from finding her, but when she’s caught her beating the crap out of her remedy supplier, she’s hauled off to CS-1 with other criminals to be reformed by the military. Its just her luck that when they run her DNA her previous service with Contact and a rare ability to speak Ceph show up.
If Akila thought failing both her physical and mental fitness tests were going to get her out of another mind-raping tour she was wrong. She’s thrown on a Navigation ship with a unit of troopers headed for Ceph space because the idiots think the Cephs can be reasoned with. Akila’s limited to transit time to convince her commanding officer that entering the Ceph’s side of the galaxy will start the Second Interspecies War. Which is something she can’t face sober.
Based on your enthusiasm and professionalism I have chosen to submit my first novel, LONG SHOT LOST an 84,000 word work of science fiction to you.
Thank you for your time.

Dear Author,
Thank you for your submission, but I’m afraid your story isn’t right for me at this time. Feel free to requery after you’ve made revisions. Good luck with your continued search for literary representation.
Best wishes,
L.C. Gant (Agent for a Day)
(Reasoning: This is a perfect example of a great concept that got bogged down with sci-fi terminology. It’s too complicated, even for fans of the genre like me. Less is more.)
Dawn says
Dear Author,
Thank you for contacting Dawn Ink. Unfortunately, LONG SHOT LOST is not what we’re looking for right now.
Best of luck in finding representation.

I know it’s tough to write a query for science fiction. There’s so much to explain and so little space.

Dear Author,
Thank you for taking the time to submit your query to me.
At this moment in time, however, I choose to pass on your project. This does not automatically mean your query is not good enough. It simply means that I am not the right agent for this project. This can be for a number of reasons.
If you would like to know why, you can send a reply to this mail. Please change the subject line to: FEEDBACK / LONG SHOT LOST / YOUR NAME. I will respond to your request within two weeks.
Good luck with finding representation and keep on writing!
Kind regards,

Thank you for your query. While the plot is very interesting, but there are some errors in your query and the prose seems too jerky. I would extend the synopsis a little so readers have a better idea of what is going on. I’m afraid I’ll have to pass.

Encouraging rejection[Reasons: This was in my top 10 vying for last spot; just went with gut reaction for another query. Sorry!]

Dear Author:
Thank you for submitting your query for consideration. I appreciate the time, energy, and passion that it required to complete “Long Shot Lost”.
Unfortunately, given the thousands of queries that I receive annually, I can only request a small percentage of manuscripts for possible representation. While I find the subject matter of your novel intriguing, it does not meet my editorial needs at this time.
I am grateful for the opportunity to consider your work and wish you much luck in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Laura Martone

Dear Author
Thank you for your submission. Your writing has an entertaining flavour. However, the story seems to be a fairly standard drugs/army story, set in space.
I’m going to pass, I’m afraid. Best of luck in finding your novel a home.
Regards
Agent for a day
[reasoning: substitute the setting for New York, and not a lot changes, so it’s not actually science fiction, but a standard drug story in space. The voice is cute, though.]
