'Tis the season for our annual Heifer International blog fundraising goodness!! We are spreading the cheer with one of the most worthy causes out there. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post to help raise money for a great cause, and you too can participate with your own pledge!
You may have already heard of Heifer International, an organization that works to fight hunger by giving needy families around the world and in the United States livestock, training, or other assistance that helps improve their livelihood. Heifer has been recognized for its work in Fast Company and Forbes, among other places.
I know we're still going through some difficult economic times, but if you have anything to spare this holiday season I hope you'll consider making a donation.
In order to encourage people to spread the word, for every comment someone makes in this post between now and 6PM Pacific time on Wednesday, my wife and I will donate $1.00 (up to $1,000)
And, better yet, if you want in on the fun you could do a per-comment pledge on your own blog and enter it into the linky list at the bottom of this post. We can encourage everyone to stop by so we can multiply the giving! Last year we raised over $2,000 together.
In your comment I hope you'll list:
1. Your name
2. Where you're from
3. A wish for 2011
4. (optional) Your own per-comment pledge (amounts totally up to you). Write a dedicated post on your blog for people to leave comments on your blog and link to Heifer and state your pledge. Then enter it into the linky list so everyone can stop by and leave a comment.
Thank you so very very much for making 2010 such a great year, and let's keep the good cheer going into 2011.
UPDATE 12/26:
Donation made!
And thanks to the other generous bloggers/commenters, the total raised so far is nearly $1500 (and some are still in progress).
Thanks so much to everyone for participating!

«Oldest ‹Older 1 – 200 of 372 Newer› Newest»Happy reading and writing for another year from Richard Gibson in Butte, Montana!
This be Will, hailing from the snowy Ohio backcountry! Or the Forums, since I seem to spend an equal amount of time there.
A wish for 2011? That truth becomes less easy to construe as lies in the eyes of society.
If I had a blog, I'd certainly participate. Unfortunately I don't, but that won't stop me from independent giving!
Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Merry Christmas from Kristina in not-snowy Denver, Colorado. My wish for 2011 is for whirled peas.
I think it's really wonderful that you're doing this, Nathan. I'd add my own pledge if I could, but I'm under 18, and my parents probably wouldn't go for it.
Also, I'd like to wish for something to make the vampires dissapear...

3. Health and happiness for my family, friends and loved ones.
Watcher's interfacing human is poor on purpose and isn't in a hurry to reveal his name.
I can say he lives in rural TN and applauds the effort 'cause he knows the value of livestock, not to mention the farmers who raise it.
Bryan Russell, and I'm from the scenic wonder that is Windsor, Ontario. You haven't seen the beauty of concrete until you've seen Windsor concrete.
My wish is for a healthy publishing industry full of wonderful opportunities for debut writers. Just, um, because.
And I've already given my Heifer donation for the holiday season! One of my favourite charities. Where else can you find a llama to give away? Everyone needs a llama. Though my cat may disagree. I'm sure they'll be friends after awhile, though...
My absolute favorite charity. Kudos to you and your wife for doing this! I am Jennifer from Wisconsin and I hope we see even more economic recovery for everyone in the new year.
Pat Rothfuss raises money for Heifer International. Perhaps your two charities could join forces like the Wonder Twins.
Here's my comment!
You and your wife are good people.
I'm in Illinois, watching the snow come down.
I don't have room to blog about it this week, because I already have plans, but I'll come back and see if it will still work next week.
For now:

Wish: Peace on Earth, or at least food for everyone.
And I love how early you're posting these days! You must have scheduled this one.
Yep, I love giving to Heifer International. Wonderful organization. Merry Christmas from Colorado.
I love these guys, too. Thanks for doing this, Nathan.
From southeastern Ohio, my wish for 2011 is that everyone who's looking for a job finds one.
Blessings to you and your wife, Nathan, for giving so generously!
My name is Jena and I'm from rural mideastern Alberta. My wish for 2011 is that my son can keep his job.
What a wonderful way to use the power of a blog. Many thanks to you and your wife, Nathan! From Dana in beautiful (sadly) snow-free New England.
My wish for 2011? For myself, to find the balance that is so constantly eluding me. For the world? For a cosmic dose of courage that gives all people the strength to do the right thing.
As for Heifer, we give every year, and my seven-year-old daughter adds the "donate" part of her allowance too! This year, chickens and a goat, I think.
Namaste Nathan, and best wishes for 2011
Yay! So excited to be doing this with you again. Here's my stats:
Susan Kaye Quinn from Palatine, Illinois, USA and my wish is to reach my goal to donate llamas to Heifer! I'm running a comment-pledge on my blog Ink Spells, but also have a donation team WRITERS GIVE HOPE where I will match your donation! Please stop by and help me give away some llamas! :)
Friends in California gave me a goat from Heifer International for Christmas. Best present ever (but I hoping for a water buffalo next year). Ran right home and blogged all about it. I'll donate $1 (up to $50) for every comment.
My wish for 2011? Less fear in the world, and more joy (oh...and a book deal for me).
Happy holidays from Caroline Bridges, resident of the inexplicably-named Inland Empire in Southern California. Wishing everyone a year of happiness, both in writing and in life.
My in-laws have donated to Heifer International every Christmas for most of a decade.
Great work.

Jaimie from Texas!
I wish for peace in 2011. Personal peace. Although peace on Earth is good too, but come on.
This writing/publishing game can turn me in all directions emotionally. I want balance.
Greetings from Rochester, NY. Instead of getting my husband's goat this Christmas, I decided to get him a goat. I love Heifer International. What a wonderful organization.
My non-selfish wish is good health for my family. (The selfish one is a five letter word that starts with 'a'.)
I'm a Grameen contributor, and at my request, my mom always buys a Christmas goat to be given to a family in Africa. So, I'm down with the Heifer effort. Thanks, Nathan!
Merry Christmas from Katherine Hyde in Ben Lomond, CA. My selfish wish for 2011 is for a book contract. Altruistically, I could wish for all sorts of things that won't happen this side of heaven, like world peace, an end to hunger, and that every person in the world would take to heart Gandhi's words: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."
You're doing a great thing, Nathan, and I wish I could join you, but our giving budget is already given for this year.
Merry Christmas!
Hannah Jenny is my real name with my last name left off and I live in a state on the east coast of the US of A.
A wish for 2011--may I finish my WIP (of course, that was what I wished for last year too--and it's the same one!)
OH, wish for 2011 - That everyone takes a step back once in a while to take a breath and remember God gave it to them. (even 'Bama fans)
Thanks for doing this, Nathan! What a great way to ring in the holidays. My co-worker and I just finalized our own Heifer donation of chicks and bees. :)
Merry Christmas from Nicole in Milwaukee, WI. My wish for the new year is that my brother's twin boys be born healthy!
Happy holidays from Des Moines, Iowa! I wish you and your wife the best in 2011! Thanks for all you do.
It's a great cause.
My wish is that we won't need organizations like these any more.
:) This is such a wonderful thing you're doing!
I'm Emy, from Texas. My 2011 wish is for a job and/or a graduate school of my choice.
My name is Mary Jo
I live Hoboken, NJ (yes, the lines at the Cake Boss are two blocks long and we have a Frank Sinatra Drive, Park, and Post Office)
My wish is that my son gets a job (same for all the other unemployed people out there, including me!)...
I took down my personal blog because it was too boring--otherwise I'd participate...Great cause!!
Heifer is a great organization. My wife and I started a regular monthly contribution to them back in the spring. (Ah spring. It seems so far off right now here in Indianapolis.)
A wish for world peace might sound trite, but it sure sounds good to me.
What an awesome reason to post, Nathan.

3. To always remember to appreciate the present.
(4.-ish) I'm getting married in six months, and I decided almost immediately in the planning process that, in lieu of favors no one wants, I'm donating the money to Heifer International. :) So, so glad to see someone as influential in the blogosphere as you promoting this incredible cause!
Heidi, from the winter wonderland that is Calgary, Alberta (Canada).
My wish for 2011: that I pour my heart into all my relationships and always make the extra effort to spend quality time with people. (And to make some good progress on my writing - I haven't figured out if those two contradict each other yet).
Thanks for reminding me about Heifer International. I first learned about it last year from your blog. I appreciate a charity that gives people the resources to help themselves.
Merry Christmas to you and yours, and my wish for you is that Jacob Wonderbar is a HUGE success, because I like to see good things happen to good people.
This is wonderful.
I'm Mira, and I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area, and my wish for this year is for the lifting of misperceptions and worldwide clarity of vision. Goes for me too. Worldwide economic prosperity wouldn't be a bad runner-up.
I don't have a blog, but I will personally pledge to donate a assortment of the less expensive: flocks of geese, ducks, chickens, some honeybees and some trees. What an amazing feeling. I love imagining all of that being delivered to people's homes. Awesome.
Thanks Nathan and Alison for your wonderful annual event.
Happy Holidays to all!
Thank you for doing this! I'll be donating myself, but I thought I'd chime in here as well. My wish for 2011? Kindness and compassion for all.
Thanks!
Katy from Ohio
I'm Jenny, from Colorado, and I really do want world peace. =)
Go Heifer International! It's a truly wonderful charity.
What a wonderful gift you and your wife are giving to so many!
Shannon from Dallas, Texas and my wish would be that people are more understanding and tolerant of others (and that my Home Owners Association won't make me take down my 15 month old son's swing...I can't even fathom sending out this kind of letter right before Christmas...sigh...).
Merry Christmas! What a great cause!
Jessica in southern California, and I wish for less judgment in the world. :-)
Tom Bentley, from soggy Santa Cruz, California. I'm wishing I'll stop complaining so damn much, and realize how much I have to be grateful for.
Nathan, thanks for continuing your blog even with your new gig, and thanks to you and your wife for your generosity.
Merry Everything!
Happy Holidays!

Thanks, Nathan.
My name is Steve. I live in Germany. I hope the Cubs win the World Series in 2011. I'm donating $100 to Heifer International, using your link.
Nathan, what a great idea, and a big thank-you to you and your wife for your generosity. I won't be doing a per-comment pledge because I gave at the office (really, that's my job).
Anyway, Peter from Connecticut via San Francisco, posting from Las Vegas.
A wish for 2011? Continued happiness for family and friends, and success in new ventures.
This is Rissa from sunny Arizona.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all your readers.
My wish for 2011...that it be better than the years before.
What an awesome idea! Bless you, and I will donate when the next paycheck comes. In the meantime, I've posted your link on FB.
I'm Julie, from Boulder CO. My wish for 2011 is to live life more in the present moment.
This is such a good cause, Nathan. Bravo for you & everyone who thinks of helping others at this time of year. I'm glad to hear they help those close to home, too (in the US).
I'm D.G. Hudson, from Vancouver, BC, Canada's west coast. I wish for better solutions to the homeless situations in many cities, solutions which help those who can't afford to pay rent rather than displacing them. We can't forget that there are many poor in both our own countries (US & Canada).
Wishing everyone a happy and healthy holiday season!
May 2011 be a great writing year. I'm already finalizing my resolutions for my writing.
Here's the 50th comment for a good cause.
Thanks to you, Nathan, for donating.
I'm so glad you're doing this again! It's been a rough year for a lot of us, but at least this way we can help.
I'm KD, in Arizona where it just refuses to look Christmasy, and I'm going to join my wishes to Sarah's and a few others, and wish for employment for everyone who wants it.
I'm Amy from Chicago, and my 2011 wish is for a cure for breast cancer.
Like a previous poster, I also wouldn't complain if the Cubbies won the World Series. ;)
Nathan, may God bless you and your wife for your generous donation!

3. I'd love to be able to donate - I've given to Heifer in the past - but I got caught up in an impromptu Christmas miracle on another blog that paired up over 800 donors with people in need. So I guess my wish is for more people like you and Jenny the Bloggess who not only make a difference in a small corner of the world, but also spark something much bigger.
Happy Holidays and I hope you beat your donation record of last year.

Cheryl Pickett from Michigan. My wish for 2011 is that less people will go hungry. I agree with what others have said too, cool use of the power of blogging. Not entirely sure how to do the linky blog thing so I'll just wish everyone a blessed Christmas and a joyous New Year for now.
Rebecca from Minnesota (currently the snow has me stranded at home). A wish for 2011? To become a year older and a year wiser.
Nathan, I just want to say I think it's so great you support Heifer. My aunt manages the southern dvision, and I got to work at the Heifer booth at the Tuscon Book Festival. Tons of fun! So this year instead of getting my friends pointless gifts, I bought them each a flock of chicks for Heifer. Thanks again, Nathan and Merry Christmas!
My name is Meg and I'm from New York. My personal wish for 2011 is to finish revising and editing my first novel. And for the world, I hope that we won't have as many suicide stories as we did this year.
Happy Holidays and thanks so much for doing this!

My name is Louise Curtis, and I'm from Australia. I hope to sell a YA adventure fantasy book to a mainstream publisher next year.
I pledge $1 per comment on my blog up to $50 (anytime between now and Christmas Eve). The site isn't letting me link to my blog - it's at twittertales.wordpress.com
What a terrific idea this is! Being troubled financially has prevented me from contributing to HI this year, so thank you for this opportunity, Nathan!
From Portland, Oregon, a weird place and proud of it.
Wish for 2011? That those in power understand that telling the truth is the only viable option.
This is Louise Curtis again. I changed my mind. I'll donate up to $500. $1 per comment at my blog (which this isn't letting me link to today) twittertales.wordpress.com

I'll put up my own post and hit the other blogs later tonight. :-)
I'm Elizabeth and I live in Minnesota. I think it's great what you're doing and Heiffer International is a great charity. My wish for 2011 is to start my own charity. But there are so many causes out there to go for, I'm not sure which one to do.
I'm Sori from Oklahoma. Merry Christmas!
Thank you, Nathan.

I'm Cat from Montreal and, for 2011, I wish for health and happiness (and maybe a bit of good luck in my quest for publication.)
All the best to you! Happy Holidays! :)
I'm writing from Berkeley, CA (also known as Bezerkly). When I was an elementary school teacher my class would nominate and vote on a charity to help and then find ways to raise money for it. Heifer Internatl always made the list and got voted in a few times. They're a good organization.
And you, Nathan, are a good person for promoting it and donating to it. I can make no promises this year, but one of my presents to my daughter (her request) is to donate money to the cause she finds worthy. I'll be sure to talk up Heifer Internatl.
My wish for 2011 is for more people like you, Nathan, to come up with creative ways to fund worthy causes.
Peace,
Tanya
I wish for a brighter new year from all aspects of relationships, happiness, peace, warmth, intellect and writing.

My wish for 2011 - personal balance, and for more and more people stepping up to do the right thing (like this!)
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Hi Nathan.
This is Karen from central Texas.
I first heard about Heifer International from a state judge who attends my fairly small church. Every year she encourages us to donate and as a result, the children of my church decided to take this charity on as a mission project. In the last few years by simply bringing their pennies every Sunday (with a few extra from the adults), they have raised enough money to purchase a cow, water buffalo, ducks, bees, rabbits and many other animals. As I'm writing this, they have over $1000 in their fund to purchase the next set of animals! I'm glad to hear that you've also taken on this worthwhile charity.
My wish? Blessings upon you and your family this Christmas season.
Karen
This is Patrice from Stratford, CT (I live in the beautiful and peaceful section known as Lordship, right on Long Island Sound).
Thanks for supporting Heifer International Nathan. A great cause!
I forgot to include my wish! Publication!!
Hi there! Kelly Ramsdell Fineman (from NJ - friend of Jenn Hubbard's) here. A wish for 2011? Peace on earth would be my pick. (May as well wish big.)
I've already sent my annual donation to Heifer this holiday, so I won't be a participating blog (sorry).
Nathan, this is a fantastic, generous idea. We donated through Plan International this year, but we also support a local Heifer learning center when we can.
I'm from Central MA and I wish for happiness and safety for a friend of mine who is leaving in a week to help start a school for girls in Rwanda.
I'm Kristi from Colorado, and my wish for 2011 is for people to treat each other with love rather than fear and distrust. That's my wish every year, but I'll keep at it. Happy Holidays! :)
I'm Jessica, from Melbourne, Australia.
My book-related Christmas wish is that the cover art of Young Adult books is better able to represent the stories inside. There were a number of instances this year where the cover art was not representative of the characters. I'd like to see more non-white books, including books written by and featuring Indigenous Australian characters. Everybody should have the chance to read and to do so about people like them.
I don't have a blog, but I think you're doing a really wonderful thing here Mr and Mrs Bransford. Merry Christmas to you both, and to all the readers.
Merry Christmas Nathan, and to all the writers reading your blog :)
I'm Tahereh from Orange County, CA, and i have a wish that one day I won't be judged by the cover of my book, but by the content of my characters.
Also, world peace.
You're the best, Nathan.
Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Mireyah, from Louisiana! My wish for 2011 is that "events" like this took place more often than just in December! I wish I could afford to do the event justice by hosting the same at my blog. =( Hopefully I'll be ale to not too far in the future!
Hello, I'm from Singapore (which is why it's such a pleasant time to comment on this blog), and for 2011...There's plenty of things happening, but I'd like to do what I can: Finish my first WIP.
Anyone seen "World" by Five for Fighting? I guess that's my hope for the rest of the world in 2011.
Mignon from Reno, Nevada. I second Sarah's wish: that everyone who is looking for a job finds one.
I've always meant to pledge to Heifer -- this time I did. Thanks for reminding me of them.
Kenner from Philadelphia, PA hopes that all of these comments will make a difference in people's lives for 2011.
I'm Tracy. I'm in OK. I wish that 2011 has fewer trials for me and my friends.
#110 Comment - ten more and we'll have enough for a sheep, goat, or pig. Or two rabbits. And you know what they say about two rabbits.
My name is Denise and I have given a donation to this wonderful organization in the past and it is so great that you are raising awareness. I live on Orcas Island and I have so many wishes for 2011. My selfish wish is that I find an agent and a publisher. My non-selfish wish is that we have an uprising that forces our government officials to put the people first. To put aside politics and work together to make good decisions to reduce the deficit, secure social security and solidify Medicare/Medicaid. We are better than this. I know we are. We can work together to take care of each other. Otherwise what is the point really?
Which brings us back to Heifer International. I give to a number of organizations so won't expound on any specifics here but I think the best, "whatever your belief system is", present is to make someone's life a little brighter.
Happy Holidays to all!
Happy holidays for everyone from Caroline in Utah... my wish for 2011? Well—let's just say a pair of thick, woolen socks. Ala Dumbledore.
Cheers :)
Hi! I'm Carrie (or Kari) from Phoenix. Wish for 2011? Maybe that I'll be a better person than I was in 2010...
I'm Christina from St. Louis. I love Heifer International; my siblings and I are making donations there instead of getting each other gifts this year, and I hope it's something we'll continue.
A wish for 2011: that the people who work to keep us safe (soldiers, police, firefighters, etc.) will be safe themselves.
Heifers rock! I'm all for virgin female cattle...I think.
Anyway, my name is J. T. Shea, surprise, surprise! John T. Shea.
I'm from New York originally, but have lived for years in Cork, Ireland.
For 2011, I wish for a llama. And peace on earth...and in outer space...our solar system anyway. But not on the imaginary planet where my WIP is set.
Happy Winter Solstice from Erika in Terrace, British Columbia (Canada). I think this is a fantastic cause.
My wish for 2011: honesty.
Girl Friday in England.
Here is my Xmas wish: books for children in need!

Merry Christmas, Nathan and Allison and all who visit here. :)

I love Heifer International and try to make a donation every year - so my wish is you raise more this year than the last!
Merry Christmas, from Kat in The Great Smoky Mountains, at Killian Knob.
Penelope Rose from Holland, MI
I hope to finish the novel I'm working on, edit it until my fingers are bloody and start querying in 2011.
Thank you so much for doing this!
What a great idea! My name is RB, just outside of Boston. My wish for 2011? More random acts of kindness.
Happy Holidays!
I just did a blog post too and am donating $1 per comment! Yay and thanks for the great idea.
Hello, Connie Hum from New York City! I think it's wonderful that you're donating to Heifer! My wish for 2011 is to get involved in another volunteer program while I work in China.
What a great cause. I didn't mean to post my blog on the list of those matching donations on their own blogs. I thought the form was for those who wanted to donate!
Merry Christmas, everyone!
Merry Christmas everyone!
My wish for 2011 is very unoriginal, but nonetheless I wish for me and my author friend to manage finding agents this year.
I work for the American Angus Association so I really dig this charity. My wish: That the house would clean itself.
Hope you have a good holiday!
This is Megan from Oregon. My personal wish for 2011 is to be able to move out of my parents' house because it's getting a little old. A wish for the country would be that our elected officials start working together instead of fighting or needing an incentive to actually vote for things. I don't really see it happening but it's nice to hope.
I'm Lisa in Texas. My wish for 2011 is more peace and progress around the world. I am supporting World Vision this year, but I have done Heifer in the past and think it's great...
I wish to stay centered and full of love, feeling it come out of me, feeling myself receive it. I wish then to be living my writing dream, feeling the words flow and having someone eagerly snatch them up for publication (first the right agent, then the right publisher).
I wish joy, prosperity, compassion, health, and the fulfillment of dreams for the whole world in 2011.
Nathan, Alison and you rock for doing this.
I'm writing from a car dealership beside a garbage dump here in lovely Connecticut, and I wish that time slows down in 2011, since so many great things are going to happen and I want to savor every minute of it.
This is a wonderful thing you're doing, Nathan, and in fact you've inspired me to make a sizable donation of my own (and not based on my blog comments... or it wouldn't be nearly as sizable).
Though, what's up with your followers? I'm a day late here, and we're barely at 130 comments? Come on, people! The less fortunate need llamas! Get with the program!
This is Laurie Muench from Oregon. Thanks for helping such a wonderful charity.
I hope everyone has a wonderful new year, and that things continue to get better for everyone.
Many blessings to you and your family this Christmas in the new year!!!

Merry Christmas to two very good people! Thanks for the opportunity to help. I've been feeling a bit low what with loss of a loved one in the past year and, like many fellow writers, much less income too. But how blessed I am compared to so many in the world. Good reminder, Nathan.
May you and your wife have a gloriously wonderful Christmas with an equally great New Year.
