Thank you for querying me, but I'm afraid I'll have to pass on your story. Best of luck in your continued writing endeavors.

(reason: I need something here about what brings about the tragic downfall. Even a taste of what that might be, and I might be requesting pages.)

Thank you for your submission, but I do not think this project is right us. This is a subjective business and other agencies will feel differently. We wish you every success with your project.

[Too coy. There's not enough information contained in the query to warrant a fair shot.]

Dear Author,

Thank you for your query. I'm afraid this project isn't right for me. I wish you luck in your search for representation.

Reasoning: While succinct is good, this is way too vague and brief on plot to hook me. The themes are common enough that IMO you need an engaging character to sell it. For example, I don't know the primary plot arc, where the story starts or enough about the protagonist to be engaged. Good luck.

On a personal note I'm not sure what kind of work you are querying. Is it non fiction, novel, crime, literary? This doesn't give a feel for voice, character development or plot line. I would re write this to convey the tone of your novel before resending. Hope this helps.

Dear Author,

Thank you for your recent query; discovering new talent is one of the joys of being a literary agent, and I am always honoured to have the opportunity to read a writer's best work.

Please accept my regrets, however, as I won't be offering to represent this novel. I apologize for informing you of this using a form letter, but the volume of mail I receive makes it impractical for me to give personalized rejections.

I wish you the very best luck in finding a literary agent whose enthusiasm will bring your book the success it deserves!

Sincerely,
J. J. DeGoblin

~~~~~~~
For your reference, here are the most common reasons why I decline certain queries. Please note that if your submission was very good, my reasons for rejecting it were probably much subtler than the items on this list and cannot be put quickly into words. Again, I apologize for this form letter, but I cannot invest the time to critique those submissions I have chosen to not represent. Thank you for your understanding.
Most common reasons why I decline manuscripts:[ ]--The manuscript is in a genre which I don't represent
[ ]--The query appears to be a non-personalized mass mailing
[ ]--The query/manuscript's presentation was worryingly unpolished
(E.g. Many spelling, grammar, punctuation or homophone errors; a non-standard format)
[ ]--The writing doesn't seem polished enough
(This improves with practice; your next novel may be excellent)
[ ]--The plot doesn't sound compelling enough
(Again, this improves with practice and self-education)
[ ]--The plot sounds too similar to something book-buyers have already seen
Comments, if any:This could be a very good story indeed, but I'm afraid your query didn't give me enough information to judge whether I might be interested.
Sasha said...
Dear Author,
Thank you for your submission. Your query didn't supply enough information for me to accurately assess whether your submission is right for my list.
Information you may wish to include in your query, in order to give a fuller picture of your submission:
Is your submission fiction or non-?
How long is it?
Is Charles Smith active in the pursuit of his goals? If not, perhaps "The System" is your protagonist?
What are your protagonist's goals?
Who or what opposes your protagonist?
What turning point marks Charles Smith's downfall?
What makes Charles Smith's story unique, and why are you uniquely able to tell it?
As written, I have to pass on your query. However, your story sounds like it has merit, and a more fleshed out letter may serve you well. Good luck in your search for an agent!
Yours Truly,
AftD
Notes: This is a hook more than a query. Wordcount? Genre? Career goals? Is it even completed?
The hook itself doesn't feel right. You talk about his "eventual, tragic downfall", but don't give enough information for me to be interested. What obstacles does he face? What kind of man is he? What are the challenges, who is the antagonist?
This might be a good novel, but I can't tell from the query letter.
Dear Author:
Thank you for your query. You might consider expanding your query. Charles Smith sounds interesting but I would need to know more about the project. Is it fiction or non-fiction? Is it completed and if so, how many words is it? At this time I will have to pass but if you decide to revise your query I would be interested in considering it again. Best of luck,
Lisa R
Dear Author of unnamed book,
Thank you for your query. Unfortunately I do not think I am the right person for this book. I wish you success in your search for representation.
Best,
Dara
Specifics: Way too short. What's the book called? What genre? Word count?
It's more of a blurb than an actual query. Add a little more substance to the letter. There's not enough detail to request more and I don't get the sense of your writing or voice from this quick little sentence.
Dear Author(s),
Your query quality is very poor and must be changed so that I can read it before I can even consider looking any work of yours, as promising as that may be. Please change your query to that it matches the submission guidelines posted.
Until then,
[As someone said, cut and paste error? If not, the main virtue here is that the query is short. The main drawback is that it is short. Too short. Doesn't tell us anything other than a premise, and the premise isn't bad. But what's the plot? The struggle? The arc? I must say... I miss Diva's snarky comments. ;-) ]
Dear Author:
I want to thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to consider your work. Unfortunately, I did not connect well enough with your project to pursue it further. As I'm sure you know, agenting is a very subjective business. Although your project didn't fit with my particular list, another agent may respond very differently.
Please accept my best wishes for success in your writing career and finding the perfect advocate for your work.
Sincerely,
Dear Author: Thank you for your query. The work does not sound right for my agency. Rejection.
Make an effort here, author. You're a writer, correct?
A one-sentence summary isn't a sufficient query, and if you can't make the effort here, why would I imagine as an agent I would want to enter into a business partnership where you are responsible for the WRITING?
Amethyst Greye Alexander said...
Dear Author,
I've reviewed your query but am afraid your project isn't a good fit with the works I represent. I hope you won't let this discourage you, however, as every agent has different tastes and you're sure to find representation that will better suit your needs.
Thank you for your submission. Breaking into print is a hard thing to do and while the premise of your story is good you have left out important information. Is it a book? If so how many words? What genre? Fiction or nonfiction. My advice to you is to do some research on querying and the wonderful world of publishing and send out some queries that follow the proper format. Good luck!
Dear Author,
Damn. This is a smack-in-the-face, reach-out-and-grab-an-agent opening paragraph of a query letter. I wish the rest was there.
Include something to suggest your awareness of the book's marketability. If nothing else, do you live in or near Nashville? Are you intimately aware of the environs and history of your story? Where are your creds?
Dear Author,
While I appreciate your consideration of our agency, I will have to pass on your project. You may want to email a more detailed query to us so that we know more about your project, your writing, and you.
As of now, I am sorry to say I did not have the passionate response to it that I would need to request more or offer you representation. Obviously you want an agent who will stand enthusiastically behind your work.
Additionally, given today’s publishing climate I do not believe I would be able to get you the attention from a publisher that your book deserves.
Publishing is very subjective, though, and another agent may well feel differently.
I do wish you success in finding representation and, once again, thank you for the opportunity to consider your work.
Sincerely,
Dear Author,
Thank your for your interest in our agency. Rather than request your MS, I am requesting a vastly expanded query. Is this a work of fiction or non-fiction? If you would be so kind as to submit a proposal that more fully describes your project I would be happy to read your query.
Sincerely,
Hi Author,
Ordinarily, a query so short and so lacking in information about the work would get routed from the hands of my assistant to the wastebasket and not merit a response. However, because it's April and I love April, I invite you to rewrite your query to include all pertinent information (genre, word count, a brief synopsis of the novel) and resubmit to our agency.
[Much too coy. If you'd've mentioned what brought on Charles Smoth's downfall, I might've asked for a partial. Don't leave an agent hanging like this. Well-placed subtlety works in prose, and only in a query if the intent reveals itself to the reader/agent.]
'his tragic downfall' - and I'm left asking - er, why?? This is really short, and I think it would benefit a lot from a few extra paras to ground us in the story more.
