Be An Agent for a Day: Query #37

This query is part of the Be an Agent for a Day contest. Rules and Regulations here

Please post your rejection or manuscript request in the comment section!

My name is Author, and I am writing to introduce you to my novel Secluded Alleys – a darkly humorous, neo-noir thriller. It is Carl Hiaasen meets Pulp Fiction in the caffeinated, smoke-choked marijuana culture of the Pacific Northwest:

The photographs allegedly show a dead woman covered with mousetraps, a dead baby holding a handgun, a dead girl provocatively posed with fruits and vegetables.

Dylan Massey, Seattle's favorite pot-addled reporter, is approached by a bizarre young man who calls himself Lou C. Fur and claims to pose cadavers with objects as an artistic expression. But when Lou is arrested as a serial killer, Seattle is awash in the controversy and Dylan's reputation is swept away in the tide of public disgust. While the cops are convinced the deaths are the work of one sick young man, Dylan sets his sights on a voyeuristic apartment manager, a bad cop with a vendetta, and a billionaire software tycoon with a dirty secret. Dylan must delve deep and face his demons in order to discover some light of truth through all of the haze.

As a former reporter and gallery director, I bring readers into the worlds of art and journalism with an eye for detail. As a screenwriter, my films have shown internationally, most recently at The Smithsonian Institute Museum of American History. My writing has received numerous accolades:

"Compared, with good reason, to stories of Raymond Carver." - The Seattle Times

"Well written." C. Michael Curtis, Fiction Editor of The Atlantic Monthly

"Startlingly unique." The Seattle Post-Intelligencer

"An evocative short story." - Matt Groening, Creator of The Simpsons

I have included a synopsis and the first three chapters of my 79,000 word novel in the body of this email. Also, please know that I am sending this query letter to three other agents who may be a good fit for my work. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Author

Dear Author,
Thank you for your query. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to review your proposal, and found the premise for your manuscript intriguing. However, I’m afraid that the manuscript does not meet my needs at this time. Please do continue to send your work to other agents, as someone else may feel differently.
Best of luck in your publishing endeavors,

Dear Author,

Thank you for your query. Unfortunately, your book isn't right for me; I'm not interested in books with such a heavy emphasis on drug culture. Agenting is subjective, though, and I wish you the best of luck!

Dear Author,

Thank you so much for submitting your work and considering me to represent it. While the story sounds quite interesting, I am afraid it does not fit my list at this point in time and I must regretfully pass. I know rejections can be hard to take, but please keep submitting and following your dream.

Best of luck in your agent hunt!

Sincerely,

Reason for rejection: I don't see how Dylan's past has anything to do with this story. Seems thrown in. But I have no doubt that this author will find an agent as his work is already recognized by many.

Sorry, but I have to pass. I may have read the sample pages, if they were provided, but ultimately there were not enough specifics about the plot and the story sounds exceptionally dark for my tastes. Best of luck.

Thoughts: Those accolades got me thinking. Good? Bad? I don't really know. Either way, I'm learning that it's a bad idea for me to request a manuscript in a genre that I know little about.

Dear Author,

This is one of those letters I loathe to write as an agent, because it's clear that you write well and you have marketable ideas.

Subjectively, however, the material in SECLUDED ALLEYWAYS is not something I feel I could zealously represent, as it would deserve.

I have no doubt, however, that you will be snatched up quickly, and I truly do wish you the best of luck.

Thank you for your submission, but I do not think this project is right us. This is a subjective business and other agencies will feel differently. We wish you every success with your project.

[I love me some gallows humor, but this sounds too morbid, even for me. I'm not sure I could do it justice during the pitching phase. Too bad, this should sell like hotcakes (if the torture and human corpse exhibits at the local museums are anything to go by.)]

Dear Author:

Unfortunately, this work isn't right for me.

Notes: The query is polished and I wouldn't be surprised if this is one of the published works because it definitely stands out. However wanting to use my 5 "requests" to encourage writers whose work I honestly would request, I couldn't pick just because I thought this might be a "winner". It's well written, but doesn't fit my personal tastes. (Too dark and.. mousetraps? A dead baby? Big Ew.)

Dear Author,

Thank you for your recent query; discovering new talent is one of the joys of being a literary agent, and I am always honoured to have the opportunity to read a writer's best work.

Please accept my regrets, however, as I won't be offering to represent this novel. I apologize for informing you of this using a form letter, but the volume of mail I receive makes it impractical for me to give personalized rejections.

I wish you the very best luck in finding a literary agent whose enthusiasm will bring your book the success it deserves!

Sincerely,
J. J. DeGoblin

~~~~~~~
For your reference, here are the most common reasons why I decline certain queries. Please note that if your submission was very good, my reasons for rejecting it were probably much subtler than the items on this list and cannot be put quickly into words. Again, I apologize for this form letter, but I cannot invest the time to critique those submissions I have chosen to not represent. Thank you for your understanding.
Most common reasons why I decline manuscripts:
[ ]--The manuscript is in a genre which I don't represent
[ ]--The query appears to be a non-personalized mass mailing
[ ]--The query/manuscript's presentation was worryingly unpolished
(E.g. Many spelling, grammar, punctuation or homophone errors; a non-standard format)
[ ]--The writing doesn't seem polished enough
(This improves with practice; your next novel may be excellent)
[ ]--The plot doesn't sound compelling enough
(Again, this improves with practice and self-education)
[ ]--The plot sounds too similar to something book-buyers have already seen
Comments, if any:
Your blurbs are impressive (and I really wish there had been sample pages), but I didn't get a good enough grasp of the plot from the query letter. If Dylan has extra clues to suggest Lou isn't the killer, that wasn't made clear.
On a personal note, this was a bit disturbing for me so I would pass because of the dead baby children thing. On a query note it is too choppy. There are fragmented bits of information put together and it doesn't flow smoothly or draw me in. I don't get any sense of why I should empathize with the main character or why this read will be something I'm going to want to devote my time to. I need a sense of voice in the query...it's just you telling what the book's about.
Hope this helps,
Bridge
(Hi!
Okay, I think the main thing this query lacked for me was FOCUS. There's a vague plot and lots of character description, but all said and done, I'm still left with the following vital questions:
why does Dylan care about this murder? What's at stake if he doesn't solve it before the police, and why should I care if he doesn't?Find the heart of the emotional conflict for me, and you'll have a better chance at grabbing this fake agent.
Good luck! :) )
(reasoning: this sounds good, but I'm not sure how plausible it is - i.e., LouCFur being able to requisition dead bodies - does he steal them from the morgue or just find them in Secluded Alleys and take snapshots - I'm also not sure how much I like the 1st paragraph - it does something for sure, but I like the 2nd paragraph as an opening point a bit better)
Thank you very much for your query. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to consider your work for representation. As you know, it’s a competitive market these days, and I don’t believe I have the right relationships to sell this project successfully. I do wish you luck in finding an agent and thank you for considering me.
(Comment: While your credentials are impressive, the pitch itself felt inadequate. I'll need to get a better sense of the layers, the sub-plots (what's Dylan's demons) for the story to be more interesting.
Also, the accolades should be linked to specific stories or screenplays they're for.)
No synopsis and no chapters.
I did like some of what I read, but the subject matter left me cold. If the chapters had been included, I would gladly have read some. Otherwise, it's not tempting enough for me to request them.
PS - Great premise, and I like the possibility of learning about another world (such as the art scene).
That said, I have some reservations. For example, the phrase "Dylan must delve deep and face his demons" contains two cliches. You'll be wanting to change those before you approach real agents.
Dear Author,
You could well be one of the published authors in this competition, but I'm afraid this query still confused me.
Your hero is approached by a serial killer-wanna-be who confesses to known crimes and your hero seems to immediately conclude that someone else did it. If he has some humorous, pot-related reason to believe this, share that in your query. That will show me your humor better than telling me how much Max Groenig likes you.
Best wishes.
(However, the pages might have changed my mind. I confess to feeling a bit off-put by the author's tone, which, to me, felt smug. Still, not sure I would be able to work with such a writer -- others might not have that problem at all.)
So, you're on the MAYBE list but not at the top. I like the voice but I think the 5 pages would tip this one way or the other. As much as I like the concept, there's aspects of the drug culture that I'm not comfortable with and how you handle it would determine whether I could rep this.
I'm finishing queries and will send a note when I'm done.
No. I can't put my finger on why not and I think you may well have great success with other agents. Possibly I am put off by your citation of other 'accolades' which are apparently supposed to persuade me to suspend my own judgement in favour of others'.
Dear Author,
Thank you for your query. I do not believe I am the best agent for your project. I wish you the best with finding a home for your novel.
(This seems to be filled with clichés, especially a bad cop with a vendetta. Look for unique ways to describe your characters.)
Interesting. I might need to read three chapters.
(I can't remember how many I requested so far! But I'm a new agent so I need the clients.)
Dear Author,
While I appreciate your consideration of our agency, I will have to pass on your project.
I am sorry to say I did not have the passionate response to it that I would need to request more or offer you representation. Obviously you want an agent who will stand enthusiastically behind your work.
Additionally, given today’s publishing climate I do not believe I would be able to get you the attention from a publisher that your book deserves.
Publishing is very subjective, though, and another agent may well feel differently.
I do wish you success in finding representation and, once again, thank you for the opportunity to consider your work.
