Dear Agent for a Day,
Angel Star is an edgy model, famous actress and successful pop singer, having achieved all of her childhood dreams at only twenty. What more could a girl want? Well, Angel only seeks a few more things, like her heroin addiction cured, her alcoholism repressed and her bulimia removed. When Angel finds herself miserable and broken at the apex of her career, she heads back to her humble beginnings in Texas to find emotional, mental and spiritual renewal, but she must first face the challenge of being accepted back into the family she left behind, igniting old flames and thwarting the paparazzi.
STAR FRAGMENTS is a 88,000 word young adult novel that chronicles the descent of a media darling shattered by Hollywood’s depravity, who learns that substituting materialism for family and love is what led to her self destruction and who eventually pieces herself back together with this newfound knowledge.
Several of my short stories have been published in my college newspaper and I am a regular reviewer of books and movies for my town’s newspaper.
Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Author

Dear Author:
I’m going to have to pass.

Why: I’m not sure what kind of book this is. Since the character is 20, it’s probably too old for YA. It starts out reading like a chick-lit, but it turns out to be very dark. Not sure.

Dear Author,
Thank you for your submission, but I’m afraid I will have to pass on your story.
I can only select a handful of queries for sample pages, and unfortunately yours wasn’t quite at the top of the list.
Take heart, however–another agent may feel differently! Good luck with your continued search for literary representation.
Best wishes,
L.C. Gant (Agent for a Day)

Dear Author,
Thank you for taking the time to submit your query to me.
At this moment in time, however, I choose to pass on your project. This doesn’t automatically mean your query isn’t good enough. It simply means that I’m not the right agent for this project. This can be for a number of reasons.
If you would like to know why, you can send a reply to this mail. Please change the subject line to: FEEDBACK / STAR FRAGMENTS / YOUR NAME. I will respond to your request within two weeks.
Good luck with finding representation and keep on writing!
Kind regards,

I’m afraid this doesn’t sound much like a young adult novel to me — for one thing, the main character is too old. Good luck!

It may just be that I’ve seen the Hannah Montana movie preview a few too many times, but the appeal of Texas and ranches with child stars is just not appealing anymore. As for the query, I would love to hear of some of the characters that Angel Star has to deal with back home, old crushes or angry sisters?

Thank you for your query. While books and movies with similar premises have been popular. I don’t know if your premise stands out enough to keep from being smothered by more high profile work. This may just be a consequence of timing, but I’m afraid I’ll have to pass.

Dear Author:
Thank you for submitting your query for consideration. I appreciate the time, energy, and passion that it required to complete “Star Fragments”.
Unfortunately, given the thousands of queries that I receive annually, I can only request a small percentage of manuscripts for possible representation. While I find the subject matter of your novel intriguing, it does not meet my editorial needs at this time.
I am grateful for the opportunity to consider your work and wish you much luck in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Laura Martone

[reasoning: it’s an interesting premise, and writing in the query as a good voice. It might do well, but I can’t see who MC is or what problems she is facing with her family or old flames. The setting and premise are clear, but the plot is too vague.]
