Be An Agent for a Day: Query #22

This query is part of the Be an Agent for a Day contest. Rules and Regulations here

Please post your rejection or manuscript request in the comment section!

Dear Agent for a Day,

Angel Star is an edgy model, famous actress and successful pop singer, having achieved all of her childhood dreams at only twenty. What more could a girl want? Well, Angel only seeks a few more things, like her heroin addiction cured, her alcoholism repressed and her bulimia removed. When Angel finds herself miserable and broken at the apex of her career, she heads back to her humble beginnings in Texas to find emotional, mental and spiritual renewal, but she must first face the challenge of being accepted back into the family she left behind, igniting old flames and thwarting the paparazzi.

STAR FRAGMENTS is a 88,000 word young adult novel that chronicles the descent of a media darling shattered by Hollywood’s depravity, who learns that substituting materialism for family and love is what led to her self destruction and who eventually pieces herself back together with this newfound knowledge.

Several of my short stories have been published in my college newspaper and I am a regular reviewer of books and movies for my town’s newspaper.

Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
Author

Dear Author,

Your book sounds promising, but I've already used up 4 out of my allotted 5 manuscript request rights, so I'm having to be more selective. I'll pass on this one.

I look forward to reading your material.

Thank you for your query. I am not offering representation at this time.

My main reason is that this doesn't sound appropriate for a YA book.

Sincerely: Agent

Anonymous said...

this sounds really good. I can imagine a lot of agents loving it. But as a reader I just don't want to read this particular genre, which probably means I'll do a crap job representing the book.

So:

Dear agent,
I'm just not the right agent for you. Thanks for querying me. Your book sounds lovely and would be much better represented by someone else.

sincerely,
moniza

Dear Author,

This is one of those letters I loathe to write as an agent, because it's clear that you write well and I do like this idea.

Subjectively, however, the material in STAR FRAGMENTS is not something I feel I could zealously represent as it would deserve.

I have no doubt, however, that you will be snatched up quickly, and I truly do wish you the best of luck.

Sincerely,

Agent X

PPP said...

Dear Author,

I was intrigued at first, being a model-wannabe myself. But I got no sense of plot--what goes down on the ranch? What are those paparazzi up to? Does the model have to reconcile with her ugly sister? These are juicy bits I feel deprived of.

Query me again, though.

Signed,
PPP

p.s. This letter and premise are promising, but this protagonist may be too old for YA.

Dear YA,

Dear Author,

Thank you very much for sending me your query for "Star Fragments." Unfortunately, it doesn't meet my needs at this time.

Thank you for sending me your query. I appreciate you considering me.

I reviewed your proposal and unfortunately am going to pass on representing it. Your story sounds interesting and timely, but it isn't something I feel would be the best advocate for. Please keep in mind that this is a subjective business, and another agent may feel differently. I encourage you to query widely.

Dear X,

Today’s Agent

(Reasoning: not grabbed. The protagonist becomes passive at a crucial stage - she just somehow finds herself broken? - and then the query descends into vagueness, with unspecified renewals and thwartings.)

Anonymous said...

Dear Author,

Thank you for considering me, but this project is not a good fit for me.

Agent99

Reason: Fits our celebrity-obsessed culture, but I would need more detail about the main character; as written, she is little more than her career and disease.

(note: the outline of your story matches many of the requirements of a successful commercial fiction, but your query letter is missing a sense of voice and there are too few details regarding a plot).

Reasoning: I feel pretty comfortable someone else would pick this up and run with it, but I wouldn't be able to because I just don't like the protagonist and wouldn't want to read about her problems or world. Totally subjective, and not a comment on writing skill. More subjective tolerances.

Dear Author:

Thank you very much for your submission, but I don't think I'm the right agent for your project.

Notes: With your protagonist being 20, well into the adult age-range, I'm not sure what makes this a YA novel. Heroin addiction, alcoholism and bulimia don't sound like YA, and you refer to it as 'edgy', which gives me the 3rd strike for it actually being YA. (Just my impressions... I'm no YA expert.)

Your query is very well written, and I wouldn't be surprised if you get several nibbles and people requesting more. It just doesn't appeal to me on a personal level. So sorry.

Dear Author,

Thank you for your interest in The Authors Write Literary Agency. I have reviewed your query for STAR FRAGMENTS, and I’m sorry to say that I do not feel that I am the best agent to represent your work at this time.

Please keep in mind that there are many talented agents out there, and opinions are subjective based on individual preferences, workload, and market climate.

Don’t be afraid to research other agents and query those that you feel are best suited to represent your work. Best of luck!

jjdebenedictis said...

Dear Author,

Thank you for your recent query; discovering new talent is one of the joys of being a literary agent, and I am always honoured to have the opportunity to read a writer's best work.

Please accept my regrets, however, as I won't be offering to represent this novel. I apologize for informing you of this using a form letter, but the volume of mail I receive makes it impractical for me to give personalized rejections.

I wish you the very best luck in finding a literary agent whose enthusiasm will bring your book the success it deserves!

Sincerely,
J. J. DeGoblin

~~~~~~~
For your reference, here are the most common reasons why I decline certain queries. Please note that if your submission was very good, my reasons for rejecting it were probably much subtler than the items on this list and cannot be put quickly into words. Again, I apologize for this form letter, but I cannot invest the time to critique those submissions I have chosen to not represent. Thank you for your understanding.
Most common reasons why I decline manuscripts:
[ ]--The manuscript is in a genre which I don't represent
[ ]--The query appears to be a non-personalized mass mailing
[ ]--The query/manuscript's presentation was worryingly unpolished
(E.g. Many spelling, grammar, punctuation or homophone errors; a non-standard format)
[ ]--The writing doesn't seem polished enough
(This improves with practice; your next novel may be excellent)
[ X ]--The plot doesn't sound compelling enough
(Again, this improves with practice and self-education)
[ ]--The plot sounds too similar to something book-buyers have already seen
Comments, if any:
This could be a very compelling read, but your query focuses on the setup, not the plot, so I'm unable to see whether this book would interest me.
Specifics: Need more detail. It seems a little too general now and the MC doesn't have enough depth, at least not portrayed in the letter. Also, I'm having a hard time believing she's acheived all of this stardom by the age of 20, especially considering she came from a small town in the middle of no where.
Dear Author:
Not a terribly original theme, but a worthwhile and important theme. If your take on it is fresh and invigorating, it might be worth looking at, but since you chose to name your main character Angel Star, there's not much chance of that.
Edit your MS ruthlessly for cliches, which are a terrible problem in Christian oriented fiction (which I suspect this is). Atypical choices make books interesting. Make some.
form rejection. The story surely is interesting and the voice of the author seems to fit the genre. Still, there seems to be something amiss that I just can't put my finger on. Maybe it's because I think that drug-and alcohol addicted models with eating disorders are somewhat clichéd. Or maybe it's just because I am not a bog fan of this kind of novel. I'm not sure so I'll pass for now.
I am sorry to say I did not have the passionate response to it that I would need to request more or offer you representation.
Obviously you want an agent who will stand enthusiastically behind your work.
Additionally, given today’s publishing climate I do not believe I would be able to get you the attention from a publisher that your book deserves.
Publishing is very subjective, though, and another agent may well feel differently.
Reason for rejection: This one HURT. I see promise for this story, but there's nothing to make me want to care for the MC. Also, I am not sure if this will cut it as a young adult novel. With the MC being twenty, finding the appropriate audience can be a tricky road for the type of story this is.
Dear Author,
There may be a novel or several novels in you, but you haven't convinced me of that with this query. There's promise, but not fulfillment. A much better query might solve the problem.
Thanks.
Not a bad idea, but I wanted more specifics about the family she left behind. What do they think of her success? What challenges does she face, exactly?
I'm sorry, but this doesn't sound right for me. Thank you for submitting.
Dear Author;
Form rejection.
Cordially,
Agent Gregory
[The query is a good length, but needs to be more specific. The problem is that the basic redemption theme, while universal and powerful, is also exceedingly common. Hence, to grab, it has to be expressed in a unique or uncommon way. I'm not seeing that from the query (doesn't mean you don't have it it in the book!). But you need to hook me. Check out the plot development sections in Donald Maass, "Writing the Breakout Novel."]
Dear Author,
There were interesting points in your submission, but I’m afraid I can’t offer representation. This is a subjective business, and what appeals to one reader doesn’t always appeal to another. With my current workload, I have to be very discriminating and take on only projects I am passionate about.
I urge you to continue your quest to be published and wish you the best of luck.
(This is such a common theme. You really need to set it apart somehow. I am personally burned out on the tragic stars, but it might be a hot topic in this genre.)
Side note: I am unfamiliar with young adult and am not a fair judge of your overview. I feel it is well written and find it to be intriguing. My hesitation (as an agent for a day) came when I saw that your intended audience is young adult. Some of the life events of your 20 year old protagonist seemed more mature than the audience. As I said, I am not familiar enough with the genre to be a fair judge in this matter, as such--please take this comment with a grain of salt. S.N.
I think the overall premise is interesting for the YA audience. You include word count and genre which all seems to fit.
I like the range of issues and challenges - although some may consider it's quite a lot to deal with in one novel, but perhaps it's not gone into very deeply. (Any one of the issues: heroin add, alcoholism or bulimia could be enough to resolve adequately in one novel, in my opinion)My favourite parts are "igniting old flames and thwarting the paparazzi".
Suggestion: I'd like to feel more that I can see how you write in the query, and not ahve you just tel me what it's about. I'd like to see why "Angel finds herself miserable and broken at the apex of her career," and not have you tell me. Let me see it for myself by writing something like "When X happens Angel does/feels/reacts XXXXX and it is the catalyst for her challenging return home..."
It may be getting close to too long for your YA market, but get some librarians/ teachers then readers at your local high school to give you feedback perhaps?
It sounds like it could be a popular YA novel if it's really well written and not overtly educational or lecturing.
Good luck!
