Dear Agent for a Day:
I would like to submit a book proposal for your consideration. X-Agency represents authors whose books I read and has been well respected in the literary community for over thirty years. After speaking with , I feel my idea will be at home in your agency.
I am working on a non-fiction book entitled Transforming Feminisms. Its purpose is to broaden the traditional definition of what it means to be a ‘feminist activist’ and how feminist theory is derived. It will provide a how-to guide for engaging in unconventional methods of resistance that move beyond identity politics toward an intersectional movement. The project will include a collection of personal narratives
that represent a diverse group of women and men who are working for social change around the globe. These people will their share innovative strategies for changing the world along with the story of how they came to and are living their version of feminism.
A community organizer turned writer, my work has been published in online and print publications including AlterNet, Curve, In These Times, Marie Claire, Nerve, RH Reality Check, and Bitch Magazine. This will be my first book, though many of the contributors are published authors. I look forward to your reply.
Best,
Author

Dear Author,
I would be interested to read your detailed proposal. Please include a list of the contributors along with interview samples.
Best regards,
Agent for a Day.

I like your proposal.
Please send me the “personal narratives” of the best known individuals that you have already collected, as well as more details about your background.
A book such as this requires two things to succeed: personal narratives from well-known people and a strongly credentialed writer to pull them together.
To move forward together, I must see that both conditions are present.
I look forward to receiving your materials.
However, your letter

Dear Author,
Thank you for taking the time to submit your query to me.
At this moment in time, however, I choose to pass on your project. This does not automatically mean your query isn’t good enough. It simply means that I am not the right agent for this project. This can be for a number of reasons.
If you would like to know why, you can send a reply to this mail. Please change the subject line to: FEEDBACK / TRANSFORMING FEMINISMS / YOUR NAME. I will respond to your request within two weeks.
Good luck with finding representation and keep on writing!
Kind regards,
Nicole34

Dear Author,
Thank you for your query. Notes like this are the hardest for me to write because while you came close, I can ultimately only represent those manuscripts I feel passionately about. Thank you for thinking of me. Good luck in placing this elsewhere.
Sincerely, Guy Stewart

Think the project needs more description. Are you collecting the personal narratives and editing as an anthology? May also want to provide a short, if possible, explanation of the theories.

Thank you for your query. Your book sounds like a worthy endeavor, but you may have more luck sending it to academic presses, who often do not use agents. I’m not sure I can see a large general interest in your topic. None the less, I support your endeavor and wish you luck in publication, even though I will not be offering representation.

Dear Author:
Thank you for your query. Unfortunately, I am only accepting completed manuscripts at this time.
Please feel free to query again when the manuscript is complete.
Best of luck.

It’s interesting but I’m wondering if the topic isn’t more suitable for a small academic press.

Dear Author,
Thank you for your query letter and for thinking of me for representation of Transforming Feminisms. While your novel sounds intriguing, I’m sorry to say I won’t be able to pursue it further with you. I wish you all the best in securing other representation.
Regards,
R. Markiam

Vaguely encouraging rejection[Reason: First sentence alone – “I would like to submit a book proposal for your consideration.” It’s late, I’ve done 42 queries, I’m getting cranky and intolerant. I tried to make myself interested in this query, but I couldn’t]

I believe this has some potential. Please send me your manuscript for further review.

Request pages[Reasons: It’s probably nuts – there are other trucking books out there, but this appeals to me. I love “Up until my last hour out there I didn’t know which I’d choose” – and the fact that he knows who Michael Herr is tipped the scale in his favor.]

Dear Author:
Thank you for submitting your query for consideration. I appreciate the time, energy, and passion that it will require to complete “Transforming Feminisms”.
Unfortunately, given the thousands of queries that I receive annually, I can only request a small percentage of manuscripts for possible representation. While I find the subject matter of your book intriguing, it does not meet my editorial needs at this time.
I am grateful for the opportunity to consider your work and wish you much luck in your future endeavors.
Sincerely,
Laura Martone

Dear Author
Thank you for your submission. Unfortunately I’m not the right agent for you.
The story is based on personal stories, but I get no sense of anything personal from your query. It reads as a dry theoretical treatise. It is a very interesting idea though, and a timely one in the field of feminism.
Best of luck in finding your novel a home.
