Be An Agent for a Day: Query #19

This query is part of the Be an Agent for a Day contest. Rules and Regulations here

Please post your rejection or manuscript request in the comment section!

Dear Agent for a Day:

I would like to submit a book proposal for your consideration. X-Agency represents authors whose books I read and has been well respected in the literary community for over thirty years. After speaking with , I feel my idea will be at home in your agency.

I am working on a non-fiction book entitled Transforming Feminisms. Its purpose is to broaden the traditional definition of what it means to be a 'feminist activist' and how feminist theory is derived. It will provide a how-to guide for engaging in unconventional methods of resistance that move beyond identity politics toward an intersectional movement. The project will include a collection of personal narratives
that represent a diverse group of women and men who are working for social change around the globe. These people will their share innovative strategies for changing the world along with the story of how they came to and are living their version of feminism.

A community organizer turned writer, my work has been published in online and print publications including AlterNet, Curve, In These Times, Marie Claire, Nerve, RH Reality Check, and Bitch Magazine. This will be my first book, though many of the contributors are published authors. I look forward to your reply.

Best,
Author

Dear Author,

Thank you for your submission, but I'm afraid your project isn't right for me at this time.

Reasons: Abstract, no examples or compelling voices, it isn't finished yet. The publication credits would give me pause, but I'd want a stronger query and a finished ms before asking for pages.

Dear Author of Transforming Feminisms,

I'm afraid I would be completely incapable of representing this book in the current market, as I don't represent non-fiction. However, based on your credentials and your topical subject matter, I'm certain you will find representation without too much strife.

Love,

Sophie

Dear Author,

Dear Author:

Thank you for your query. Unfortunately, it isn't right for me.

Best of luck,
Agent for a Day

[Reason: Although I might be interested in the topic and I *kind of* get where this is coming from, the premise still seems a bit vague and haphazard, particularly the "intersectional" concept. Intersectional with what? And what is it that makes this a fresh take? Less is usually more, but in this case an example or two (bulleted, perhaps) of the stories the author would be sharing would really help to crystallize this.]

lesleylsmith said...

Dear Author,
Thank you for your query letter.
Unfortunately, your book is not a good fit for me.
Good luck!

p.s. This premise is promising, but as a non-fiction book, I need more information about the author's expertise and platform.

morphine-moniza said...

this sounds like an academic book. I think there are specific publishers for those. University presses and what not. Do academics even need agents?

sincerely,

JSB said: I don't mind the book not being finished. Often non fic is pitched before it's completed, but not something I'd personally be interested in repping.

Exactly. All you need to sub nonfiction is a book proposal, which usually includes a query, and a solid platform, which this author obviously has.

Pass.

I'm not interested in feminism, per se, and unless you can provide "famous" femisists -- i.e. Gloria Steinhem, as contributors, I'm afraid I'd have a tough time placing this with anything but a small or academic press.

Other agents may feel differently. Best of luck.

scj said...

Sorry, but I have to pass. I love hearing ideas about what it means to be a feminist, but ultimately don't feel like this book has a different enough take on the subject for me to successfully represent it. Perhaps another agent will feel differently, if you provide enough specifics. Best of luck.

Dear Author:

Thank you for your submission, however I don't think I'm the right agent for your project.

I know nothing about non-fiction and what agents are looking for where it is concerned. I might pass it on to a co-worker, but that would be the best that the author could hope to get from me.

jjdebenedictis said...

Dear Author,

Thank you for your recent query; discovering new talent is one of the joys of being a literary agent, and I am always honoured to have the opportunity to read a writer's best work.

Please accept my regrets, however, as I won't be offering to represent this novel. I apologize for informing you of this using a form letter, but the volume of mail I receive makes it impractical for me to give personalized rejections.

I wish you the very best luck in finding a literary agent whose enthusiasm will bring your book the success it deserves!

Sincerely,
J. J. DeGoblin

~~~~~~~
For your reference, here are the most common reasons why I decline certain queries. Please note that if your submission was very good, my reasons for rejecting it were probably much subtler than the items on this list and cannot be put quickly into words. Again, I apologize for this form letter, but I cannot invest the time to critique those submissions I have chosen to not represent. Thank you for your understanding.
Most common reasons why I decline manuscripts:
[ ]--The manuscript is in a genre which I don't represent
[ ]--The query appears to be a non-personalized mass mailing
[ ]--The query/manuscript's presentation was worryingly unpolished
(E.g. Many spelling, grammar, punctuation or homophone errors; a non-standard format)
[ ]--The writing doesn't seem polished enough
(This improves with practice; your next book may be excellent)
[ ]--The idea doesn't sound compelling enough
(Again, this improves with practice and self-education)
[ ]--The idea sounds too similar to something book-buyers have already seen
Comments, if any:
This could be a great book, but non-fiction demands the author have a platform, and your query doesn't detail how strong yours is.
On a personal note, this work is not finished and it shows. I don't get a sense of why I would want to read this at all. How does it stand apart from others? I'm not pulled in. Look at the truckes memoir, I'm not interested in that subject material, but man the query and voice rock! Try to get a feel for why people would want to read this book even if they wouldn't necessarily read about feminism. Good luck,
Publishing is very subjective, though, and another agent may well feel differently.
(Hi! Okay, I just want to say that I think this is a great topic, especially as it pertains to intersectionality among different female/culture groups. I would love to read more; however your opening paragraph is a bit choppy and muddled, and you have some grammar/tense errors here and there throughout that I would probably pay more attention to as this is a critical theory/educational work.
Sorry I can't give you too much useful feedback here, but I do hope you move forward with the idea! Good luck!)
Dear Author;
Form rejection.
[The issue here is the academic nature of the work. The query just isn't exciting, at least to me. The first paragraph can be dropped without a loss. I don't know what the market is for "how-to" guides for "unconventional methods of resistance" but that just carries a negative vibe. I'm not into feminism, but stuff like "intersectional movements" sound like a grad course to me in sociology. Doesn't mean it's bad. Maybe there's an audience for that outside of the classroom. I don't know.]
Dear Author,
Thank you for your query but I'm afraid I'll be passing on this one.
It's great that you're working on a book about Feminism, but I'm not getting a strong sense of your concept and platform. It's a large field with already a lot of books on the subject, including introductory ones, so you need to do more to differentiate your work.
Good luck with finding an agent!
Thanks,
Dear Author,
Thank you for your submission, but I'm going to have to pass. Though the subject could make a good book, I felt your proposal lacked details of the books direction and your platform. I'm also unsure why you didn't list the contributing authors (or a selection of them), as this would have improved the platform, assuming they are well known in the field.
Dear Author,
There were interesting points in your submission, but I’m afraid I can’t offer representation. This is a subjective business, and what appeals to one reader doesn’t always appeal to another. With my current workload, I have to be very discriminating and take on only projects I am passionate about.
I urge you to continue your quest to be published and wish you the best of luck.
Dear Author,
Thank you for your query. Unfortunately I am unable to request a partial at this time.
Kind regards,
Side note: I appreciate the overview you've provided. A clear picture of the book layout is evident, as is your approach to the subject matter. Unfortunately, what is not clear is the definition of feminist action that the book portrays. Without that, I do not know what I'm being asked to represent (as pretend agent for the day). Even by taking an ethnographic approach (which may be your intent) a new definition is formed. My recommendation is that you include a summary of it and keep querying...best of luck!
Mira said...
Dear Author,
I am very glad that you are writing this book. An updated version of feminism is sorely needed. Your idea of including interviews from published authors and leaders in the field of feminism is outstanding.
I am not requesting a partial, because I think this might be a hard sell to a publisher in today's more conservative market - a market that is focused more on issues of security than of politics.
However, an independent publisher or a women's press might be very interested in your work. The right agent, also, might really fight for it.
If it's not published already, I really hope it will be. With a work like this, it's all about the timing, and finding the right advocate.
Best of luck!
Mira
Whilst I like the concept and believe you will write it well, I don't feel it would have a broad market appeal and especially at the current time, would not be picked for publication for now.
To be more convincing you could perhaps include some of the names of your co-writers, "many of the contributors are published authors."
